Cephalometric Radiography

Cephalometric radiography is the examination during which we have a two-dimensional image of the head where we can examine the jaws and skull of the examinee and make useful measurements.

Cephalometric radiographs can be anterior, lateral, or anterolateral. Each of these has its own utility and corresponding indications. For example, anterior and anterolateral cephalometric radiographs are commonly used to evaluate the bones of the head and diagnose fractures. They also provide a lot of information about the sinuses and paranasal sinuses.

In dental radiology, the lateral cephalometric radiograph is most often used. It is an essential examination for the orthodontic evaluation of teeth. On the cephalometric radiograph, the orthodontist performs a series of measurements and calculations and based on these determines the type and stages of treatment. Therefore, the analysis of the lateral cephalometric radiograph is, together with the panoramic radiograph, the most important diagnostic tools for the orthodontist. It takes just a few seconds and gives immediate results that are useful in the diagnosis and treatment of a number of diseases.
